Dealing with the loss of someone close to us can be very difficult for anyone to handle. Of course it was devastating when my girlfriend’s mom died. Shortly after her mom’s passing she started to realize how much she was forgetting things. Super organized, always on the ball and a perfectionist her forgetfulness really started to distress her. If an appointment was forgotten or she misplaced her keys, any of those simple things would fling her into a violent anxiety attack. However, she immediately thought that this forgetfulness must be from some sort of undiagnosed disease and then those thoughts would attack her… what if it’s cancer or a brain tumor? What if I die? Why can’t I get this Panic away from me?

She began feeling unsure of herself, unable to focus or concentrate and scattered as more time went by. Her irrational, obsessive thoughts would make her spiral out of control and her anxiety attacks were frightening. Trying to find which disease she had she would be on the internet for hours. She was certain she was going crazy. She didn’t even want to talk about it with any of her family or friends fearing that they would all think she’s crazy too. She was scared.

Grieving is a process and it takes time, death is a huge tragedy. It’s not uncommon to feel forgetful, overwhelmed or scatter-brained. Because her mind couldn’t think logically at the time, she became obsessed running to the doctor every time she’d forget something, her obsessive thoughts seemed completely normal. She asked her doctor to perform many different tests but he concluded that she had General Anxiety Disorder, surprised but a little relieved, she didn’t know how to stop the anxiety on her own.

The fear of dying was the root of her anxiety, especially since having her mother die. Most reasons of panic and anxiety come from being fearful of something. If you suffer from anxiety or panic have you asked yourself what you`re afraid of? Her obsessive thoughts consumed her so even during the night she would wake up trembling in fear.
