Additional Thyroid Testing ?

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about 9yrs ago after experiencing massive hair shedding. I took Levoxyl for several yrs, but due to insurance, was switched to the generic Levothyroxin (.75mcg).
I’ve also taken birth control over the years, but switched to the Mirena IUD 7 months ago. My hair loss stopped after I initially started on medication, and actually thickened back up again 8yrs ago. My once beautiful thick hair which earned many compliments has been reduced to at least half of what it once was during the last 1.5-2yrs. My scalp is beginning to show thru more & more & it really freaks me out. I don’t know what has changed, & have seen on here about other testing that I may need the doctor to run. We currently don’t have insurance either, due to a lay-off, but I plan to go see the doctor the moment we get new insurance and need to know specifically what I need to ask the doctor.

I’m very new to hair loss.. here’s my story!

I feel weird even writing about this. I am 24 years old, I’m in University for Art and Design, have a long term boyfriend and am a pretty happy girl for the most part. (that’s my general overview)

I have always had a full head of hair. Although it was curly and pretty dry, i loved styling it and making it look nice! I started to notice my hair thin about 6 months ago, I really just thought I was seeing things and didn’t think anything of it. Then over some time, especially walking out of the shower and seeing my thin wet hair I noticed something was seriously not right. I showed my mom and she also couldn’t believe it. I still continued to ignore it until some of my usual hair styles wouldn’t work anymore – my side part became too wide and having to wear hats and headbands on a regular basis. I recently started to get panic attacks and trouble breathing and freak out from time to time. I went to the doctor about this and he said i was depressed and had high anxiety (this runs in my family) and so he gave me meds. On the second day of taking the meds threw up 6 times with 20 minute intervals. I refused to take anything else for my anxiety and decided to get through it on my own. All that took up alot of my time and forced me to ignore dealing with the hair loss for a while. Then I started to look into making an appointment to see a dermatologist about my hair (this was like 4 weeks ago). I went and the doctor mentioned all those names I’ve been reading on here, Androgenetic Alopecia, Telogen Effuluim, Hormonal Imbalance etc. She said she "thinks" i have Androgenetic Alopecia and that I should come back for a biopsy to make sure. She told me to get on birth control right away and to start taking menoxidil. I did not do either of these because I wanted to wait and find out exactly what i had. My biopsy was this past Thursday and I’m waiting for my next appointment which is in 2 weeks to find out exactly what i have. Until then I will not take any medication, although i have started taking iron supplements only because they are natural. And after reading about all those negative effects from birth control, I’m scared and have no clue what I’m going to do when i get my results!

Thanks for reading, everything I have read on here makes me feel ALOT better knowing I’m not alone, even though it really feels like it

Tea Tree Oil Shampoo Contains Phytoestrogens??

I was talking about hair loss with my friend yesterday and when I told her I use organic sulfate free tea tree oil shampoo, she freaked out and told me "Oh my gosh! Don’t use tea tree oil because it contains estrogen from the phytoestrogens and can mess with your hormones!" I told her I had been using this shampoo for years now because I thought I was doing something good by using sulfate free. I also thought tea tree oil is supposed to be good for the scalp to prevent hair loss.

Now I am so confused. And worried because I have several hormonal issues because of hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency (effects cortisol, DHEA, testosterone, etc).

Does anyone know anything about tea tree oil containing phytoestrogens and if this is unsafe or can actually mess with our hormones?

Thanks ladies!

propyl paraben dangers – Parabens are not new on the beauty scene, nor is the controversy surrounding them. However, while there has been a great deal of hype on both sides of the issue, the real problem, as we see it, is that there is not enough information assembled in one place to enable everyday makeup, shampoo and moisturizer users to make an educated decision for themselves.

The information presented in this report has been gleaned from multiple, cited sources. You can easily verify this information by reading the original source material yourself. The goal of this report is not to scare you out of your shower – literally – by showing you a monster in your shampoo bottle, but we do believe that it is important that you are aware of any potential health ramifications that might be associated with the use of that shampoo (or moisturizer, makeup or body cream), should there be any.

* What are parabens? - According to the FDA, parabens are “the most widely used preservatives in cosmetic products.” They are used in a variety of forms called “esters,” which are molecular compounds that are formed when an alcohol and an acid interact and water is removed. While this may sound disconcerting, it just means that parabens are molecules that have a special formation and do not contain water. This special formation enables them to protect substances that contain them from bacterial invasions. As you can see, this makes parabens highly appealing as preservatives in cosmetics and beauty products since many of the ingredients in these products are organic. Parabens help prevent your products from literally “going bad” in the same way that food might go bad if you left it out on the counter for an extended period of time.

Also according to the FDA, you may find parabens under the following names: methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Check out your own hair and beauty products. You will likely find these listed in most of the ingredients.

* What are the concerns about parabens? - Now that you know what parabens are, you may be wondering what the problem is. After all, not smearing rotting wrinkle cream all over your face sounds like a good thing. And it is. However, the concern is not with parabens’ preservative properties, but rather with the results that absorption of parabens can have on your internal system.

This raises several issues…to read the rest of this report, access http://beautyctr.com/306/paraben-peril-are-they-the-hidden-danger-in-your-shampoo-soap-and-cosmetics-that-many-people-claim/
